Program Description

Civil Engineering allows students to understand the fundamental principles of civil engineering and the utilization of up-to-date software and hardware equipment.

Goals of the program:

  • The student will be able to:
      1.  Pursue successful professional careers in civil infrastructure, construction, and environmental engineering or related fields while remaining technically current through graduate education and professional engagement.
      2. Excel as leaders, team members, communicators, and innovators in collaborative multicultural environments.
      3. Benefit society by practicing their profession responsibly and ethically, and sharing their knowledge through training and mentorship opportunities.
      4. The 137 credit-hour programs will include 15 hours of civil engineering electives where students will learn how to design and develop structural, geotechnical, transportation, and hydraulic infrastructure, and manage environmental, water resources, and construction projects.
      5. The program culminates into a mandatory field experience and an interdisciplinary capstone design project. Since the introduction of third-year industry placement, our students have had a unique opportunity to work on some landmark projects in Dubai, the UAE, and worldwide.
Program Details
  •  The Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (B.S.C.E.) degree is a four-year program consisting of 137 hours of required credit.
  • Core subjects are split into Mathematics/Natural Sciences, Arts and Sciences, and Civil Engineering.
  • There are also 15 credit hours of civil engineering electives, where students can choose courses that range from structural analysis and design, geotechnical engineering, water resources, environmental engineering, and transportation engineering.

Upon completing their studies, graduates will be able to

  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex civil infrastructure, construction, and environmental engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors.
  • Communicate effectively with a range of audiences, through oral, written, graphic, and electronic channels.
  • Make informed engineering decisions, guided by ethical and professional responsibility, and consider the global impact of engineering solutions on the economy, environment, and society.
  • Function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.
  • Develop and conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.
  • Acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies such as self-regulated learning, experimentation, and cooperative learning
Facilities

Fluid Mechanics Laboratory

  • Equipped to perform and demonstrate a number of experiments that provide undergraduate students with the practical applications of fluid mechanics, facilities include:
      1. Hydrostatic pressure apparatus to measure hydrostatic forces on submerged bodies;
      2. Orifice and jet apparatus to allow students to compare actual and jet trajectories, calculate the coefficient of discharge for various orifices, and identify different methods of flow measurement;
      3. Fluid friction, bends, and fitting apparatus to allow students to determine major and minor losses in pipes;
      4. Pipe network apparatus to measure flow and pressure drops in a wide range of network configurations, e.g. individual pipes, series pipes, and parallel pipes;
      5. Flow visualization channel for conducting several applications in open channels such as hydraulic jump, discharge under sluice gate, and energy equation;
      6. Osborne Reynold’s apparatus facilitates the demonstration of laminar and turbulent flow.

Materials/Structures Laboratory

  • Equipped with testing apparatus chosen to demonstrate a wide variety of experiments in materials engineering as well as structural theory, facilities include:
      1. 150 kN Instron Universal Testing Machine;
      2. 2000 kN Autocon concrete compressive strength machine;
      3. Shmidt Hammer and ultrasonic kit for assessing the compressive strength of concrete;
      4. Profilometer that detects bar location and orientation, bar size, and concrete cover;
      5. RAB Rockwell/Brinell hardness tester.

Geotechnical Engineering Laboratory

  • Occupies more than 200 square meters of lab space and houses multiple sets for soil classification and testing, including:
      1. Casagrande and fall cone devices for liquid and plastic limits;
      2. Sieve sets for particle size analysis;
      3. Manual and automatic compaction devices;
      4. Four-panel stations are available for constant head and falling head permeability testing;
      5. Automated testing equipment including pneumatic consolidation apparatus, and direct shear apparatus;
      6. Unconfined compression loading frames and triaxle cells for shear strength testing of soil specimens.

Circuits, Electrical Systems, and Robotics Labs

Enterprise Computing Lab

  • Dedicated general-purpose computer labs, each equipped with:
      1. 25-30 PCs and projector;
      2. High-speed internet network;
      3. The software includes MATLAB, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, MathCAD, Primavera, Etabs, SAP, and Pspice.

Thermodynamics Lab

  • Thermodynamics and heat transfer lab, equipped with:
  • Heat transfer service units;
  • Radial heat conduction evaluation units;
  • Free and forced convection units;
  • Drag coefficient measurement for spheres;
  • Heat exchanger unit.

  • The University administers the ACCUPLACERTM Exam (Math) to place students at the appropriate mathematics level.
